| | Thursday Terry and I took the day off to enjoy the NC beaches....and
get married. We drove to New Bern late Wednesday night to stay at his
mom's house. We actually woke up fairly early yesterday morning. We got
dressed and headed out to the Register of Deeds office in downtown New
Bern.
Upon arriving, we immediately headed back out the door remembering that
we needed 50 dollars in cash for the marriage license. We also picked
up the 20 dollar court fee as well. Afterwards, we were on our way to
the courthouse to get married. Too bad there was a sign on the door
that said, "Back at 11". So we decided to pass the time eating some
breakfast.
We sat around for about 45 minutes. We noticed 2 other couples enjoying
their coffee and were going to ask them to be our witnesses. They
suddenly left in a hurry, so we changed our minds. We started walking
back to the courthouse, when we saw 2 people on a bench outside the
building. Unfortunately they were waiting for a ride to show up at any
minute. So we walked around the building hoping to find 2 other random
people to be our witnesses.
We lucked out because there were 2 gentlemen outside the magistrate's
office. We waited and waited. He showed up after 11 and then went into
a back room. After waiting another 10 minutes, he came back out ready
to help. One of our witnesses immediately left to go to another
room...oh rats! The other went out for a smoke. In walked another
gentleman to see the magistrate...Yes, our 2nd witness.
We got them both together and then got the magistrate's attention to
tell him we were ready. We stood outside since the office was getting
warm and was very stuffy and we were sick of being inside it. There was
a nice breeze blowing outside and no one was being hauled into the jail
at the moment.
He read very quickly.....VERY QUICKLY. And then we kissed and were
married. The ceremony took about 5 minutes, if that. And we were off to
celebrate for the rest of the afternoon at the beach.
We swam a little bit, but there was a strong rip current. We played in
the sand, took a walk, and eventually went back in the water when it
started to calm down.
Around 5 we had a Dairy Queen treat, and headed back to his mom's to
share our news. Then headed home around 8:30 after eating some more
food. We manged to get in at 10:30, which is hard to believe (and I
didn't speed!).
Now we're very happy and exhausted from our day of fun in the sun.
Thanks for all of your messages of Congrats. Formal announcements will
be sent to those of you that I have addresses for, once my sister's
wedding is over. And be on the lookout for in-town celebrations going
on in the upcoming weeks.
Thanks again!
